Ford was a champion of the early novels of Elizabeth Madox Roberts – The Time of Man (1926) and My Heart and My Flesh (1927) – praising the “extreme beauty” of her writing.1 He also mentions both books in his survey of The English Novel (1929).
The Elizabeth Madox Roberts Society is inviting proposals for papers, panels, or round-table discussions for its 23rd Biennial Conference to be held in Springfield, Kentucky, on 15-18 October 2026. The submission deadline has been extended to 15th September.
To celebrate the centenary of The Time of Man – which Ford declared “the most beautiful individual piece of writing that has as yet come out of America” – the conference theme is 20th Century Southern Women Writers, considering Roberts in conversation with other significant female authors of her time.
Programme highlights include a Big Reads Event of The Time of Man at Washington County Library led by Amanda Capelli, followed by an afternoon at the Springfield Opera House. Registration also includes a lakeside dinner at Rotary Park, and a dinner at the historic Talbott Tavern with Keynote Speaker, Dr. Erin Presley of Eastern Kentucky University.
